IUL Education
Indexed Universal Life (IUL) is a type of permanent life insurance. It is worth understanding plainly what it is designed to do, what it depends on, and where the tradeoffs sit before you decide anything.

IUL provides a permanent death benefit — protection that stays in place as long as the policy remains in force under its terms. It also builds a cash value whose growth is credited based on the movement of a market index, subject to the policy's rules. That is index-linked crediting, not owning stocks. You do not hold shares, and you do not receive dividends.
Policy costs can reduce value even with a crediting floor. A floor limits how far an indexed credit can fall in a period; it does not stop the cost of insurance and other charges from drawing down cash value.
Caps and participation rates vary and can change within what the contract allows. The participation rate determines the percentage of index movement used in crediting, while a cap limits the maximum indexed credit in a period.
Funding flexibility does not mean any payment keeps coverage in force. Paying less than what the policy needs over time can exhaust cash value and cause a lapse.
Loans and withdrawals affect benefits and can increase lapse risk. Subject to the policy's terms, they can reduce cash value and the death benefit, and they may create tax consequences — consult a tax professional.
Suitability depends on an actual insurance need and a long-term budget that can be maintained. IUL is not inherently better than term or whole life. Term life can cover a temporary need at a lower cost. Whole life offers contractual guarantees where premiums are paid as required. See a side-by-side comparison.
I help Washington residents — including families in Kitsap County, Bremerton, Silverdale and Port Orchard — think through protection needs, budget, and the tradeoffs of IUL in plain language.
